Behind The Cupboard

The Heart & Hands Behind The Cupboard

Our story begins with Chrissy (my mom), the lively Cookie Curator whose infectious enthusiasm and love for cooking have always been the heart of our family. As the 12th of 13 children, she’s always cherished and prioritized creating sweet memories around meals — a value she passed down to me.

Her shortbread recipe is a love letter to the cookies of her childhood. My improvement upon it is my love letter back to her. I spent thousands of hours refining that recipe until it was perfect... well, perfect enough. And hearing my mom say, “You’ve done something different with these cookies,” — in the best way possible — was the beginning of our evolution from Chrissy’s Cookies into Chrissy’s Cupboard. That “something different” reflects what I believe every generation is called to do: honor what came before while building upon it, elevating the family’s legacy and inheritance for the next generation.

This dream fueled by a simple batch of cookies and a lot of heart — has grown into so much more. We are deeply grateful to all of our customers and supporters. Thank you for supporting our dream!

Our Flavor Philosophy

We believe snacks should satisfy your stomach and nourish your soul. They should tell stories, spark smiles, and stir up sweet memories. Every bite is a moment of comfort — made to be shared.

Here at Chrissy’s Cupboard, food isn’t just food — it’s a way to connect, to slow down, and to savor the good things that never go out of style.

Our Motto

“Short on Bread, Never on Flavor” started as a fun phrase—and over time it just stuck.

In the early days of Chrissy’s Cupboard, we were pouring everything into this dream — time, energy, money (or lack thereof). But even when the “bread” was low, we never cut corners on what mattered: great flavor, warm connections, and doing things with love.

Now, that simple phrase is a reminder to find sweetness in every day — even when life feels…well — short. So, whether you're building a dream, raising a family, running the world, or just running errands, we hope our treats give you reason to pause, smile and savor the sweet stuff.

Our Process

Making shortbread cookies is part art and part science. Like most, we stick to the basic formula of butter, sugar, and flour, but it's the way we bring those ingredients together that sets us apart—creating the melt-in-your-mouth cookie you love.

Thousands of hours, countless taste tests, and a whole lot of attention detail turn every batch from something good — to extraordinary. It’s this dedication to detail that extends to everything we make.

A Sweet Story Worth Sharing

Shortbread has come a long way—from humble beginnings as leftover bread dough in medieval Scotland to a deliciously legendary, melt-in-your-mouth treat once reserved for royalty. At some point, someone had the brilliant idea to swap yeast for butter, transforming a rustic loaf into a rich, crumbly cookie. Back then, ingredients like butter and sugar were expensive, making shortbread a rare indulgence for special occasions. But over time, that simple mix of butter, sugar, and flour evolved into more than just dessert—it became a symbol of celebration, served at weddings, holidays, and to honor cherished guests.

It gradually made its way into homes and schools around the world, becoming a simple joy many remember from childhood. In cities like Chicago, they’re still fondly remembered as “The Lunchroom Cookies”—a favorite our founder, Chrissy, recalls with a smile.

What we love most is how shortbread connects cultures and bridges generations. At Chrissy’s Cupboard, we’re proud to be part of shortbread’s sweet journey. With curiosity and deep respect for where it all began, we honor that heritage by crafting a new generation of shortbreads—elevating the classic with deeper flavor, more varieties, and the timeless hope of passing on something even sweeter to your families and ours.
